Mandela, My Dad and Me
In 2013, Idris Elba produced and launched “Idris Elba presents mi Mandela,” an album that drew inspiration from his experience researching and playing Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” The rich musical heritage of South Africa, both contemporary and historical, deeply influenced him, and immersing himself in the music that Mandela would have enjoyed throughout his life greatly assisted Elba in preparing for the role. Plans were set to record the album in South Africa and Mali towards the end of 2013, but unfortunately, just before Elba’s departure, his father, Winston, passed away. While simultaneously working on the album and promoting his film, Elba enlisted BAFTA award-winning director Daniel Vernon to capture his journey. “Mandela, My Dad and Me” chronicles not only the challenges of creating his debut album but also his heartfelt mission to honor two inspirational figures.
