Mara and Jo have been inseparable best friends since they met at the age of 14. Mara is the reliable one, while Jo often finds herself in turmoil. Both of their lives lack stability, with uncertain jobs and unfulfilling relationships, and writing is merely a side pursuit, as is common in Brooklyn. Amidst the daily routines and conversations, their friendship remains the only constant, defined by a familiar pattern: Jo calls Mara in need, and Mara drops everything to help, only to find Jo’s mind has already moved on by the time she arrives. The narrative gently progresses, highlighting different instances of this recurring theme, as Jo’s struggles intensify and Mara’s frustration builds. As time goes by, they experience new jobs, relationships, encounters with drugs, emotional moments, and fresh beginnings, including a pregnancy and the arrival of a little girl, all of which gradually test the strength of Jo and Mara’s friendship.
