Privileged and affluent Whitt Sheffield is in his final semester at law school when a professor tasks him with representing a young single mother who requires assistance in securing and maintaining employment. Whitt, whose elitist father expects him to pursue a career in corporate law, feels demeaned by this low-status assignment, particularly after meeting Kylie Burch, the woman he is supposed to assist. Initially, Whitt and Kylie are at odds, and it seems unlikely that Whitt will be able to help her unless he gains a better understanding of her circumstances. However, when the future of Kylie and her son as a family is suddenly jeopardized, Whitt realizes that he and Kylie might share more similarities than he initially thought.
