An adult reflects on his childhood experiences living with his mother and two sisters in Australia during the final year of World War II. With his father away fighting against the Japanese, the family receives assistance from two Italian prisoners of war on their estate. Eventually, two German refugee women also join them. The challenges of rural life and personal conflicts reach a climax.
