Sawa works as a caregiver for a middle-class family, looking after their elderly, ailing grandfather. To maintain her employment, she is compelled to compromise her ethical standards. This leads to her financial ruin and homelessness. On her first night without shelter, she forms a complex bond with a benevolent elderly man, which allows her to tap into the vast riches possessed by Japan’s older generation. As she engages in more of these interactions, what starts as deceitful schemes or acts of retribution against pervasive sexism gradually transforms into genuine, vulnerable exchanges between different generations.
