Ten Years
Five intriguing short films explore the future of Hong Kong a decade from now. In “Extras,” two amiable, small-time gangsters are recruited to orchestrate an attack, only to find themselves pawns in a larger political scheme. “Season of the End” captivates with its portrayal of rebels who collect remnants of demolished homes and objects as artifacts. “Dialect” follows a taxi driver grappling with the shift as Putonghua replaces Cantonese as the sole official language of Hong Kong. “Self-Immolator” delves into the aftermath of a prominent independence activist’s death, where a self-immolation outside the British consulate sparks intense debate and demonstrations. Lastly, “Local Egg” centers on a grocery store owner concerned about his son’s involvement in youth guard activities and the challenge of sourcing eggs after the closure of Hong Kong’s final chicken farm.
