The Boondocks

The Boondocks

“The Boondocks” is an American animated sitcom for adults that airs on Cartoon Network’s late-night segment, Adult Swim. Created by Aaron McGruder and debuting on November 6, 2005, the series is adapted from McGruder’s comic strip of the same name. The narrative follows the Freemans, an African-American family who relocate from Chicago’s South Side to the fictional, tranquil, and predominantly white suburb of Woodcrest. The show derives much of its humor and tension from the interplay of different cultures, lifestyles, socioeconomic backgrounds, stereotypes, and races.

Across its first three seasons, the series has produced 45 episodes. However, the two-part finale of season two, “The Hunger Strike” and “The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show,” was not broadcast on American television due to Adult Swim’s concerns about potential legal issues with BET. These episodes did air on Teletoon and were later made available on DVD in the U.S. Additionally, the season three episodes “Pause” and “The Story of Jimmy Rebel” were removed from regular rotation after their initial airing and are no longer shown in reruns. A fourth season, consisting of twenty episodes, has been scheduled to premiere in January 2014.
